The story behind the book
I’ve always believed in the power of women.
Even as a child, I was aware of it.
I understood something about women looking out for each other. About the comfort of being understood by another woman. About how much easier things can feel when your sister has your back.
Then I became a mother, and I began to realise how often the small, everyday moments in my own life came from other women.
Some of them were my friends.
My sister.
My mother.
My family.
But then there were the women I didn’t even know.
Like the woman at the checkout who stepped in to soothe a sibling fight while my hands were full.
And the woman who helped me reverse my car through a tiny car park because I couldn’t see where I was going.
There was the waitress who helped when my toddler was having big emotions over a spilled milkshake and I was feeling exposed, embarrassed and vulnerable.
And the fellow mum in the car park who gave me a hug because she could see I’d had a morning.
None of these moments seemed particularly significant at the time.
That’s what struck me.
The women who helped me were simply going about their day.
They probably didn’t go home thinking, wow I really helped that woman today.
But they did.
Their tiny acts of kindness and empathy made my day better.
And it made me wonder how often we do this for each other without ever knowing.
About how many women have made our lives a little lighter without realising it.
And how many times a woman noticed something, offered a hand, saved us a seat, sent a message, made us laugh or simply understood, and then carried on with their day.
Women was inspired by those moments.
By the friends and sisters and family members who are woven through our lives.
But also by the women whose names we might never learn.
The women who make an ordinary Tuesday feel a little different.
This book is for them.
